Sandvik to showcase innovative manufacturing technologies as a theme partner at Subcontracting Fair

News  24.09.2024

Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions is committed to driving electrification, digitalization and automation in the mining industry, drawing on AI, machine learning and digital signal processing. The aim is to improve the productivity, safety and sustainability of mining operations. Sandvik also has a significant role in the manufacturing industry, continuously developing new solutions to optimize production competitiveness.

The Subcontracting Fair will be held in the Tampere Exhibition and Sports Centre on October 1–3, 2024. The theme of the fair is “AI driven Productivity”, and Sandvik is a theme partner of the exhibition. Sandvik presentations will focus on innovations, manufacturing competitiveness and sustainability.

In modern production, automation, the Internet of Things (IoT) and big data analytics create the concept of smart factories. Harnessed correctly, these technologies improve production efficiency, product quality, use of materials, and reduce energy consumption. Sandvik is committed to more sustainable production, which is an important goal in the manufacturing industry in general.

“Automation, digitalization, and electrification are the keys to achieving higher productivity and sustainability goals. Digital manufacturing and smart factories speed up processes and improve efficiency by utilizing artificial intelligence and data analytics”, says Jani Savinainen, Manufacturing and Supply Chain Manager, Sandvik.

Challenges related to data collection, goal setting and assessing usefulness increase complexity in today’s sustainable manufacturing. “How can we make ERP systems communicate with production control and machines? We need high-speed and reliable data connections to transfer massive volumes of data and support the quality and efficiency of the processes. Artificial intelligence can support decision making and optimize processes and the use of resources. Combining digitalization, automation and electrification opens up tremendous opportunities for business development. It is equally important to understand the basic manufacturing processes and principles in order to harness the technologies to support them,” adds Savinainen.

Automation, artificial intelligence and digitalization also raise critical questions about the ethical foundations of data processing, technology and automation. How to make the necessary leap in digitalization and electrification? How do companies operate in the era of technology, and what are the risks associated with data and artificial intelligence? How to ensure learning and change in mindsets and practices?

“It is important that technology is not developed only by tech companies. Developing and commercializing new solutions require years of research and creating new value chains together with multiple partners. We have been collaborating extensively with universities and various research institutions for decades. Reliable suppliers, customer co-operation and leading knowledge are also needed to ensure that innovations meet future needs,” says Savinainen.

Sandvik’s manufacturing technology expertise covers component manufacturing and equipment production. The company continuously develops innovative solutions that support sustainability and efficiency in the manufacturing processes. Automation and sustainable production ensure that technological development supports both environmental and operational goals. One significant project is the Data Powered Rock Drill Network, which is being implemented in collaboration with Business Finland. The aim is to promote innovation in both the manufacturing and mining industries. Sandvik is one of Business Finland’s leading companies.

Integrating advanced manufacturing technologies into Sandvik’s operations enables the company to meet future challenges and build a more sustainable and smarter future for production.
